Chikmagaluru Tour Packages
from Bangalore

Chikmagaluru is the closest hill escape Bangalore has — about 245 km and a 5-to-6-hour drive, against the 9-plus hours it takes to reach Gokarna or Dandeli. It is a hill station that rewards repeat visits rather than a one-and-done trip.

Why Chikmagaluru, and why it works as a weekend trip

Most of Karnataka and Kerala's hill stations ask for a long weekend at minimum. Chikmagaluru doesn't — you can leave Bangalore Saturday morning and be on a trek or a coffee estate by early afternoon. That's made it the default short-notice getaway for people who can't always plan two weeks ahead: solo travellers, couples, small friend groups, and increasingly, companies running a quick offsite.

It's often compared to Coorg, and the two do overlap (coffee, hills, similar distance), but Chikmagaluru has the edge on trekking — it's home to Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, the Baba Budangiri range, and the permit-protected Kudremukh National Park trekking cluster, none of which Coorg can match.

How to reach Chikmagaluru from Bangalore

This is the one route on our list where self-driving genuinely makes sense for a weekend — 5 to 6 hours each way via NH75 through Hassan, with Belur and Halebidu's temples as an easy detour on the way. Overnight buses run this route too, though the short distance means most people don't bother with a sleeper and just drive up early morning instead. It's also one of the most popular biking routes out of Bangalore. Full route breakdown, road conditions, and detour options are in our how to reach Chikmagaluru from Bangalore guide.

Best time to visit Chikmagaluru

October to March is the most reliable window — clear skies, good visibility from the viewpoints, and comfortable trekking weather. Monsoon (June to September) turns the whole region green and fills every waterfall, which is spectacular, but Ghat roads can get foggy and slippery, and some trek routes close for safety.

If you time it right, late March into April brings the coffee blossom — a short window right after the first pre-monsoon showers when the estates turn white with flowers, and one of the more underrated reasons to visit. Full seasonal breakdown, including coffee harvest timing (November to February), is in our best time to visit Chikmagaluru guide.

Chikmagaluru trip cost from Bangalore

Because the drive is shorter, Chikmagaluru trips are typically cheaper on transport than Gokarna or Dandeli — the bigger cost swing comes from stay category, since coffee-estate homestays and resorts price very differently from budget guesthouses, and rates climb in peak season (December–January) and around the coffee blossom window.

For a full cost breakdown by stay type and season, see our Chikmagaluru trip cost guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — it's the easiest of our three destinations to do as a straight two-day weekend, thanks to the short 5–6 hour drive each way.
Both are similar distances from Bangalore and share the coffee-hill combination. Chikmagaluru has stronger trekking, with Karnataka's highest peak, the Baba Budangiri range, and the Kudremukh National Park cluster; Coorg leans more toward leisurely estate stays. If trekking matters to you, Chikmagaluru is the better pick.
Mullayanagiri is shorter and more accessible, with a motorable road most of the way up. Baba Budangiri involves more walking and combines a trek with a pilgrimage site. If you want something tougher, the Kudremukh National Park cluster — Kudremukha, Netravathi, Kurinjal, Gangadikal, Bandaje Falls and Merthi Gudda — is the next step up, though every trek in that range needs a forest permit booked in advance.
Yes. Kudremukha, Netravathi, Kurinjal, Gangadikal, Bandaje Falls and Merthi Gudda all require an online Aranya Vihaara permit and a certified nature guide — spot bookings aren't allowed. Weekend slots on the popular routes sell out fast, so we recommend booking at least 15–20 days ahead. Our Trekking Package handles this end to end.
It's possible but tight — you'd spend close to half your day on the road. We've laid out exactly what fits into a single day in our one-day trip guide.
Typically late March into April, right after the first pre-monsoon showers — the window is short and shifts slightly year to year depending on when the rain arrives.
